What is HPL?HPL is an abbreviation for high-pressure fire-resistant decorative panel-commonly known as fireproof board.

1. Origin of Technology (early 20th century)
In 1913, American chemists Daniel J. O'Conor and Herbert A. Faber invented phenolic resin lamination technology, initially used to manufacture electrical insulation materials such as switch panels.
In 1927, the American company Formica was established, which first combined phenolic resin with kraft paper to produce the earliest HPL board, named "Formica" (meaning "to replace mica"), mainly used for industrial insulation and functional components.
2. Commercialization and Decorative Applications (1930s-1950s)
In the 1930s, HPL technology was upgraded to include decorative surfaces such as wood grain and stone grain, which began to be used for furniture and countertops, replacing natural wood and marble.
During World War II, HPL was widely used in the interior panels of warships and aircraft due to its fire-resistant and corrosion-resistant properties.
In the 1950s, it entered the civilian market and became the mainstream material for kitchen countertops in American households, known as the "modern kitchen revolution".
3. Globalization and Standardization (1960s present)
In the 1960s, European companies such as Polyrey in Belgium promoted standardized HPL production and established environmental and fire protection levels (such as EN 438 standard).
In the 21st century, China has become the world's largest producer of HPL, and compact laminates have become popular in the medical and transportation fields, giving rise to special models such as antibacterial and translucent.
